Depends on how many consumers you think are geeks, really
Well, we certainly weren’t expecting this. GoMo News trotted down to London’s Tower Bridge (the one that opens up) for the launch of the Prestigio Multiphone 5430. The key attraction is that the handset was being co-promoted by Intel whose processor was inside, naturally. We anticipated chatting about whether the UK market had room for yet another smartphone brand. Even if the branded handset in question was very competitively priced for a pukka smartphone (£199.99 inc VAT from Maplins, for example). However, the assembled hacks questioned the wisdom of the company’s strap-line – ‘The art of high-tech’ when the handset was actually shipping with Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) when 4.1 Jelly Bean has been out for ages.
In reality, it all boils down to whether or not you think the kind of consumer who would purchase a dirt cheap smartphone from Maplin is a smartphone geek.
Geeks would know that Android 4.0 [which the handset sports] is massively out of date but bargain hunters probably wouldn’t give a damn. Especially when the handset proudly boasts ‘Intel Inside’.
GoMo News has been given the white version (as opposed to black) of the 5430 to play with. And quite frankly we expect a lot of people will ask us if it’s the new iPhone!
All of this controversy distracted us from the fact that the 5430′s specifications are really quite impressive. (See below).
We were particularly impressed by the emphasis placed on the handset’s battery optimisation.
It also seems to be a pretty good choice for the mobile phone gamer with its high spec graphics processor, too.
All in all, we reckon that Prestigio – which is part of the ASBIS Group, has a pretty good chance of breaking into the UK market.
Especially if one of the large UK retail chains decides to throw its weight behind the handset.
The only thing which we would have loved would have been if the handset had supported the very latest (& fastest) version of Wi-fi (802.11 ac).
Then it would have worked with out high speed Wi-fi router from D-Link. Ho, hum
The only real criticism we have is that this handset still requires a full size GSM SIM – which has sent us searching for our SIM adapter.
Well, you can’t win them all as they say. Prestigio didn’t win the day but there’s always tomorrow. We look forward to trying its dual SIM model, for example.
