Conveneer gets $4.5 Million funding to turn your mobile device into an online site

Conveneer today announced that it has secured $4.5 million in financing. Through it’s Mikz service, Conveneer allows content stored on mobile phones to be accessed like it was on an online site. The funding will be used to further develop Mikz, as well as push sales in the US before its commercial launch their later this year.

Mikz works by assigning a URL to a mobile phone, allowing selected content on the device to be accessed from any browser, as if it was a web site. Conveneer is currently working with mobile phone handset manufacturers, wireless carriers, and various application developers to launch its initial product suite.

From the release:

“As more and more information is collected on people’s mobile phones, the need to easily reach and share it, in a secure way, from any computing device becomes very important,” said Tom Barton, general partner, Broken Arrow Venture Capital. “Conveneer’s unique technology, for which it has filed several patents globally, satisfies this demand and makes it a must-have connectivity service for any mobile phone manufacturer or wireless carrier.”

“It is crucial to our development that we attract major investors like Industrifonden and Broken Arrow Venture Capital,” said Örjan Johansson, chief executive officer of Conveneer LLC, USA and chairman of the board. “Both organizations have deep experience managing and investing in innovative companies in telecommunications and the Internet. They will be instrumental in helping us to optimally drive a successful launch of Mikz later this year, and to develop the channel that will help ensure its adoption in the United States, Europe and beyond.”

What we think?

Oh, hello. This is interesting. I don’t know about you, but there are a lot of photos and videos on my phone that will probably never see the light of day. Transferring content from my device to my computer and then hosting it isn’t the biggest annoyance in the world. But it takes long enough that I often don’t bother, and then afterwards I’ll forget to get back to it. I haven’t seen how Conveneer handle the process of selecting what content on your phone goes onto the “website”, but if it’s as simple as saving it to a certain directory then I could really get some use out of this. Being able to send a quick email (or SMS) to my friends to say “click this link to see how the party went last night” would be incredibly handy.

I’m really not surprised at all that this service got a few million in funding. The work is done on-network, and Conveneer seems to be dealing with carriers and manufacturers. So, I presume this service will be integrated at carrier-level and either sold or given free as a VAS.
