GoldSpot Media has made a bold claim. It says that through its application creation platform, miApp, a developer can create a single application that will be suitable for sale on any application store. Well not ANY store, despite it’s claim of “Deploy In Any App Store” – so far miApp supports iTunes, Android Market, Blackberry App World, Ovi and certain operator stores. What’s the story?
What is miApp?
It’s web-hosted platform for building apps and advertising campaigns. GoldSpot describes it as being “drag and drop” and “rapid”, so we can assume that a certain amount of complexity has been sacrificed in order to allow these apps and campaigns to be automatically coded for a large number of app stores.
So, you create an application from the miApp drag and drop interface, and it generates an application/mobile ad campaign for you that can be paid for by subscription or ad-support, and can be shifted through any application store.
Every application store? Really?
No, not really. That’s a forgiveable bit of hype there in the advertising, but you can see what stores are supported in a graphic from the GoldSpot website:
You’ve got three manufacturer app stores up there, one OS specific one and the rather general “Carrier” category. But no mention is made of other manufacturer stores like Samsung. No mention of indie app stores like Handango or GetJar either. Call me pedantic, but if you say “every app store” you should mean “EVERY app store”. Maybe GoldSpot does support those stores, but it doesn’t give any indication.
Anyway.
What we think?
Is it any good?
I can’t really tell you that – I’m not a developer, so I can’t judge the service on it’s own merits. It supports a good range of functions though, including billing, sales support and in-app video and actionable items. So in the majority of cases an advertiser, or a developer with a simple app idea, could probably create a good application using this service. But there are other services that attempt the same kind of thing. Wapple and Genuitec, for example, enable the creation of “universal applications” by optimising web applications to work on mobile browsers. And there are others. Adobe just released a service to allow applications to run on any device that supports Flash. GoldSpot has gone an interesting route by attempting to automate the process for actual app store approval. Only the developers will be able to tell us if it works.

Cian: You are right in your assessment that certain amount of application complexity has to be sacrificed to deliver a ubiquitous app across multiple stores. But this platform is not intended for media rich apps such as games that use the sexy APIs on the phone such as accelerometer etc, but, more for the zillions of e-content publishers to cost effectively and rapidly go-to-market on mobile. The bench mark for the platform is that a Pizza Hut or TV.com like app on iPhone can easily be created and deployed across the app stores we currently support.
