CTIA interview: Kamar Shah Head of Industry Marketing Nokia

by: Bena Roberts Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

I had the delight to meet Kamar Shah from Nokiayesterday.  I have to say now that he showed me an amazing presentation – Nokia know how to do slides!

We had a mix up of where we were going to meet up but when I did meet him – he put on the charm and we had a great meeting. Infact for fun this year I was going to do the GoMo News insider business awards with categories like best dressed marketing man - hottest trade show stand - best presenter. Kamar is in the early lead for Mr. Style!

Anyway – I spoke to Kamar about two very important issues the mobile internet and music.
I didn’t mention that I thought the name “comes with music” was unfortunate –but we did talk about Nokia music services.

Bena: What is this “comes with music” exactly?

Kamar:  It is a new Nokia innovation. It’s were music becomes a key part of the mobile the device.

Bena: So the music is in the device like an ODP?

Kamar:Nokia has a seamless music strategy for mobile devices. Think of it like this. The device (price points to be decided) will be a music device and a music service with constant music content. So access to content portfolios of huge music companies will be available as play lists.

(we jumped around a bit and then I got to the cost issue)

Bena: I am getting confused – what is free?

Kamar: You pay for the device and it “comes with music” (we went through a slide)

Bena: I got it! It’s like the Apple iPod or iPhone concept but from Nokia.  But the access is inclusive to the package you buy.

After I finally understood the music service I asked Kamar several  more questions on the mobile Internet. I know about Ovi and I have Ovi on my phone and have been testing it. I know it is the “door” to the mobile Internet – but is there one Internet or an online one or two?

Kamar spoke in detail about the Internet being the Internet and Nokia as a mobile experience platform. So the answer was like we love the Internet in any shape or form –but our main aim is the ensure that whatever consumers want to see or view – they can in the simplest possible form – or their best experience on ANY device.
OK – that is the short interview and I got a great picture of Kamar that I will upload later.  I am going to do my own review of OVI later on.
