CTIA Mobile Barcodes session David Miller CEO Mobile Discovery

by: Bena Roberts Monday, April 7th, 2008

I got excited after viewing this presentation as David Miller the young CEO from Mobile Discovery managed to say all the right things. He spoke about interoperability of the 2D Barcode market in the US. He spoke of mobile advertising innovatively using mobile barcodes, he spoke about the best user experience and a new eco-system for mobile barcodes.

I don’t think that he realised it, but he actually was also speaking of a mobile barcode search experience – like one I have been talking about regularly.

So what is Mobile Discovery?

It is a mobile 2.0 Mobile Barcode advertising agency. It is a company that offers templates for advertising and marketing based around successful mobile barcode templates.

What?

From what I understand, the user experience is critical to mobile barcode acceptance. Mobile Discovery is about providing brands with made for market, made for uptake templates and solutions that can be used for full scale advertising campaigns.

At the moment, there is a US trial taking place and mobile operator Sprint has used the services.

On the whole, David Miller gave a stellar presentation in a short space of time and made a strong case for mobile barcode advertising. All we need now is a mobile barcode advertising search solution to add weight to the value of the services.

Looks good in theory, but in reality it’s already been a proven disaster:

I don’t know… between the sexist trial and the outrageous costs… not worth it.

Scanbuy and Mobile Discovery really shot themselves in the foot with this 2D barcode trial at Case Western Reserve University.

I am afraid Scanbuy’s CEO Jonathan Bulkeley and Mobile Discovery’s CEO David Miller really missed the mark here. This was a simple 2D barcode implementation, and Scanbuy and Mobile Discovery couldn’t even get it right.

Perhaps Case Western Reserve University should have stuck with industry leader NeoMedia Technologies … The company that Case originally trialled with.

Lets just hope that Scanbuy and Mobile Discovery haven’t damaged the mobile code ecosystem too badly.
