D2-Day (Droid2-Day) should be June 23rd

Rating: Latest news on Android 2.2/Froyo

June 23rd 2010 could well prove to be a D-Day (Droid2-Day) for Android 2.2, according to a report on Cnet here. Look at the speaker line-up. Andy Rubin, Google’s vp for engineering, and Shantanu Narayen, Adobe’s CEO. And this is an event being held by Verizon Wireless, a key supporter of the Motorola Droid.

Adobe’s participation is crucial, given that support for Flash is a key feature of the next Android release (2.2 aka Froyo).  Of course, all of this is built on speculation that Verizon will use the event to announce the Droid 2 – aka Droid X/Droid Xtreme/Droid Shadow.

froyoUntil now, it had been assumed that the Droid X would have been running Android 2.1 and become available in August. But now it seems extremely likely that Motorola will skip the update to 2.1 and go straight for 2.2/Froyo.

Interestingly, Cnet also dug a table out from the Motorola customer forum here. It clearly shows that existing Droid owners can now upgrade to 2.1 and provides instructions for those who haven’t managed to do so yet.

Somewhat disappointingly, the table says that an upgrade to 2.1 for Dext owners in Europe is still under evalation whereas those in the Asia Pacific region should get the upgrade by Q3 2010.

Incidentally, this GoMo News hack has recently discovered that the Dext isn’t the European equivalent of the Cliq not the Droid as we originally thought. Sorry about that.

In which case daring Dext owners might consider the latest hack from Modmymobile here which is known as Eclair2CLIQ. This takes the Cliq from 1.5 to 2.1.

Of course there are hacks out there in the wild which can take the Nexus One up to Android 2.2 Froyo and the guys at Sizzlecore here reckon they have discovered the very latest version of Froyo.

It boasts a build number of FRF72. Why it isn’t called FRY72 (FRoYo 72) instead, we don’t know.

Meanwhile GoMo News will stay glued to its email mailbox waiting for Motorola to finally spill the beans about the official 2.2 upgrades.
