Danger to be acquired by Microsoft

Rating: It´s all about social networking apparently

I was extremely puzzled when I learnt that Microsoft was going to acquire (for an undisclosed sum) the mobile software specialist firm, Danger.
Microsoft´s Robbie Bach muttered something about social networking at the press conference and the press release which arrived today spells it out more succinctly.
Microsoft sees Danger as a ´way in´ to social networking and consumers in particular.

That´s funny because I´d always viewed Danger as being more of a UI vendor rather than  a provider of an “effortless and fun mobile experience.” Well, that´s what the press release says. When Microsoft starts talking about Danger providing real-time mobile messaging, it has me thinking that perhaps Mr Bach thought he was buying RIM not Danger.

After all both are known for providing push email services on devices dedicated to the purpose. Except that Danger doesn´t make its own hardware – it relies on Motorola to do that with the Slide, etc. It will be interesting to see what legacy Danger has left behind when we all arrive at the next MWC.
