Rating: How do I get my handset’s GPS going?

by Tony Dennis

I ran into Richard last night who proudly displayed his latest toy – a Nokia E90 Communicator. He’s a long time user – having owned the original HSSCD version from Orange.
Now he’s on O2 and can’t get his GPS or push email working. But he was prepared to pay for lessons. The closest analogy I could come up with, was paying a driving instructor to teach you how to get the most out of a new sports car.

There’s obviously a demand for smartphone training so why isn’t
commonplace? The answer I believe is not necessary a lack of skills but
the difficulty of specialising.
There are so many smartphones out there which models do you decide to
support?
You can’t just say Nokia or Symbian based handsets. That’s
because your clients want a level of detail which would take ages to
acquire. For example, I recently tried to help somebody turn Bluetooth
on.
This I’ve done thousands of times before. But it took five minutes
to find the right key on the keypad of a Sony Ericsson because the
option wasn’t under Settings as I grown accustomed to.
The most disturbing tale Richard told me was that he’d asked for
support from O2 to download the Nokia Maps. The only visible setting
was to do so via WLAN (Wi-Fi).
Why couldn’t he do it via 3G (or even HSPDA in the E90’s case)?
"We
don’t support GPS," came the reply from O2’s help desk.
If the network operator can’t help a subscriber download content like
Maps, who can? Time to found the British Institute of Smartphone
Instructors, methinks.
