DRM-free mobile music site Dada offers Christmas bonus to new subscribers
Rating: Sony-supported service offers free downloads in the run up to Christmas
Dada is an extremely rare service.
It offers DRM-free music legally, with full payment options available on your mobile bill (no credit card required). There are any number of ways a person can download DRM-free music from the net, but very few of them are within the bounds of the law. If that sounds like a good idea to you, then I’d hold off on signing up for a couple of days, because beginning this Friday Dada will be giving a substantial bonus to new subscribers for the month of December.
What’s the deal?
Dada is quite reasonable at the best of times. Unlike the iTunes store, where you pay for each individual track or album you download, Dada sells monthly downloading “packs”, where you purchase the ability to download 15 songs for 10 dollars. This makes their tracks a touch cheaper than the iTunes store, but the selection is limited to music from the Universal Music Group and SONY BMG catalogues. So, not all that limited really.
The bonus it’s offering is that if you sign up from this Friday onwards, you get 65 songs for the month of December. Which drops the price of each song down to 15c. Not so bad!
Anything else?
Music isn’t the only thing available from Dada. Since they’re also focused on mobile device usage, they offer ringtone, wallpaper and game downloads. It seems music can currently only be transferred onto your mobile device, but the press release also mentions an upcoming over-the-air mp3 download option for mobiles.
From the release:
“With the economy suffering the way it is, and the holidays just around the corner, we wanted to give something back to new subscribers,” said Antonella Stellacci, Vice President of Marketing for Dada Entertainment. “With the latest full-track MP3s, ringtones, wallpapers and games available for only 15¢ each, anyone looking for a digital and mobile entertainment experience isn’t going to find a better deal anywhere else.”
What we think?
I just love it when marketers pretend they’re doing something for the good of the people! There’s never anything altruistic about offers like this. If Dada can hook a few thousand new subscribers with this offer in the hectic Christmas period, then all those free downloads will pay for themselves.
Cynicism aside, this really is a good service. I’ve been downloading my music from iTunes for quite some time now, because the quality of the tracks are guaranteed, but those tracks are enclosed by some serious DRM. Being able to legally download DRM-free tracks for a genuinely quite reasonable price is just a good service. It’s good to see the really massive labels moving into territories like this. The only way they’re ever going to be able to damage music piracy is by offering reliable, easy services like this at a cost that consumers are willing to pay.
