EA Mobile taps hollywood for mobile games series

eamobile_logo EA Mobile, the mobile division of Electronic Arts, has announced a new series of mobile games. Hitting Hollywood for the most popular fantasy and sci-fi movies, it will be launching games based on Harry Potter, G.I. JOE, Star Trek and Wolverine. The most interesting thing I found about this is that the titles are mostly for features phones.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, G.I. JOE and X-Men Origins: Wolverine are all being released only for feature phonessmartphones don’t get a look in. Star Trek is being released for both feature phone AND iPhone – the only smart device that gets mentioned at all.

Star Trek and X-Men are available right now – if you desperately want to play as Harry Potter or G.I. Joe on your phone, I’m afraid you’ll have to wait until July.

From the release:

“There are a lot of great movies this summer that translate into exciting mobile entertainment experiences, including these phenomenally popular franchises,” said Adam Sussman, VP Worldwide Publishing, EA Mobile. “These are four of the hottest films this year, and EA Mobile is proud to bring fantastic game companions of each title to mobile phones.”

What we think?

I’m not really sure what to make of this release. I think it’s great that EA Mobile are doing a big release for feature phones. There are still a lot of them out there but they tend to get ignored in favour of their smarter cousins. But EA has shown huge interest in creating games for smart platforms, especially iPhone, in the past. It’s possible that EA has discovered there’s just as much money in feature phone releases. It’s also possible that EA doesn’t believe these games are worth releasing on smart devices! Or, indeed, that the smart versions are still in the works.
