GetJar has announced the release of it’s own mobile advertising platform, GetJar Ads. The service is specifically created for monetising apps that are downloaded from Getjar – which currently stands at over 20 million a month
GetJar Ads places targeted ads on mobile apps when they are in use. Placing an app on GetJar is free, and developers get revenue from clicks on the text and banner ads placed into their apps. GetJar has also included a Pay Per Download option. This allows developers to bid for better placement on GetJar, paying when consumers download their app. Mobile developers bid for downloads, starting at $0.01 per download.
From the release:
Medieval Software, a developer from Italy, said that the profits generated from the GetJar Ads trial alone where enough to cover the company’s operating costs. Davide Ciuchini, CEO of Medieval Software said “Application development can be expensive when one considers the time and number of handsets you have to work with. Getting distribution and getting paid through one large partner makes it easy to grow my business profitably. GetJar Ads’ highly targeted, highly contextual service generated enough money for Medieval Software that it literally helped us fund the business.”
“The GetJar Ads solution has been designed to provide the most profitable advertising channel available to mobile application developers, delivering a 100% fill rate and high CPM,” explained Ilja Laurs, Founder and CEO of GetJar. “Mobile developers have long recognized GetJar as the place to Get Downloads – now it’s a place where they can also Get Paid.”
What we think?
I’ve already voiced my doubts concering ad-funding as a sustainable business model, so I won’t go over it again. I will say that this almost certainly going to make a lot of money for a certain number of people in the short-term. Whether or not it will be a long-term earning remains to be seen. It’s interesting that GetJat have included the same bidding option that exists for Google AdWords. It’s rise has seemed pretty unstoppable so far, so I’m guessing this is phase one of the 2009 expansion they promised.
