Firefox mobile not ready for Android yet… but you can still get it

logo-mozilla-fennec-2009-03 Fennec is the much-anticipated mobile version of Firefox, and it has been in development for so long that you may have lost hope for ever seeing it. But there’s a glimpse of light now, as the XDA-Developers Forum has put up an Android compiled version that you can go and download right now.

Fennec?

Firefox is the most popular downloadable browser in the world – and it is run by the non-profit Mozilla Foundation. This foundation has been developing Fennec for a long time now. All we’ve been getting is the occasional tantalising glimpse. Earlier this month, snaps showing Fennec running on a Nexus One showed up on Facebook – and now you can try it yourself. You can download the APK (Android package file) here

What we think?

“Huh, guess Mozilla meant it when they said it’s just not optimized for Android yet” – so says grainysand, a senior member of the XDA-Developer forum. The download file is over 40MB (yeesh), and apparently it runs really slowly on Android. I’m going to be putting it on my Acer Liquid during today – I’ll let you know how I get on.
