Rating: so in reality a gphone is nowhere in sight

So after all the hype, the reality is that has teamed up with 30 players in the mobile space to launch an Open Handset Alliance. gPhone software might be coming but my experience with open alliances is that things take time – a lot of time (look at Freemove).

But basically the new alliance is called Android

Will this impact white label mobile search companies? Hell, no. They might as well join too and so should Nokia. (This is ofcourse depending on the joining fee if there is one – I think the W3C is something like GBP 60K sign-up)

Do I sound disappointed? Perhaps – but its not about wanting a new device or a gphone as such its just such a shame that there are so many existing strong software packages and initiatives on mobile (including 3 Next application centre) that aren’t getting the kudos desired because hype from Caesar (I mean Google) wastes so much time on industry speculation.

A gPhone client will appear – everyone can help to develop it – it’s probably the only way Google will get on every handset but personally I see an advertising nightmare on the horizon.

Google makes its money from advertising and this new client, gPhone or alliance will be eager to monetize the industry and put “acceptance” on what should not be accepted; which means more pop-ups, spam, affiliate marketing and everything else we hate on the Internet - now on mobile
