Fully-featured Android security app comes out of beta

Rating: At a pricepoint you’ll like – it’s free

The app’s author has kept pretty quiet about it but the Android security app which we have been raving about – avast! Free Mobile Security – has finally come out of beta. You can get it from the Android Market hereGoMo News is particularly amused by this comment from Ondrej Vlcek, who is CTO with Avast Software. “We’ve developed our [app] at a price everyone can afford.” Precisely – it’s free and there’s nothing missing from this app. Actually, it’s the other way around. There are facilities buried away in this software which you wouldn’t believe. This is largely due to its recent acquisition of the Theft Aware app developed by IT Agents which has been merged with regular anti-virus software. As Vlcek says, “When a smartphone is stolen, the owner’s number one desire is to get their device back intact and, secondly, to secure their private data.”

He continues, “For Android phones, our security starts with recovering the lost or stolen device intact.

To do this, we’ve built a unique array of ‘stealth’, remote-access, and anti-malware features to help owners recover their lost phones and stay protected from online threats.”

As the software’s author claims on the Android Market, Avast is offering a fully featured anti-virus and anti-theft app for Android smartphones.

It helps protect personal data with automatic virus scans and infected-URL alerts.

The best bit is very definitely ‘App Disguiser’ where users can rename avast! to something totally innocuous to hid it from hackers.

In terms of anti-theft it supports remote SMS commands enabling history wipe; phone lock; siren activation (help I’ve been nicked); GPS tracking; and audio monitoring.

Some features such as the firewall will only work if you root your smartphone. However, we’ve already provided hints on how to do this here.

Your ‘invisible’ app hides itself, making it extremely hard for thieves to find and disable.

GoMo News is determined to test the remote control features of this app and will let you know what we discover.

Meanwhile there’s loads of detailed information about this app here.
