Eagle Eye and Mobiqa have announced that they will be working together to create a mobile coupon solution. Like many other services, this is centred around letting the customer display a barcode coupon on their mobile device screen, but they want to go beyond that. Since both of these companies have been working in the mobile coupon field for a long time, they want to provide a single service that offers multiple channels for delivering and redeeming vouchers.
The two companies are both patent-holders in their areas. Eagle Eye focuses on mobile retail solutions, and holds a Chip and Pin coupon patent. Mobiqa is a mobile barcode expert, and holds the patent for optimisating barcodes to fit on any mobile device. By combining their technical expertise, they want to create a service that combines barcodes, SMS text codes and NFC (Near Field Communications).

From the release:
Steve Rothwell Director from Eagle Eye Solutions comments, “The addition of Mobiqa’s patented technology to our solution gives retailers the full range of redemption technologies removing any last technology barriers for a retailer to offer mobile gift vouchers or mobile coupons. This alliance cements our position as the number one provider of mobile services to the retail sector.”
Nick Rankin, CEO, Mobiqa, comments, “Our partnership with Eagle Eye Solutions heralds the coming of a smarter, more convenient means of coupon and voucher issuance and redemption. Consumers can now enjoy the added freedom of always having their vouchers and coupons easily to hand and no longer need to worry about remembering their paper coupon before going shopping.”
What we think?
There are a whole bunch of companies working on mobile coupons and vouchers. It’s one of those areas of the mobile market that everyone knows is a great idea, an idea with legs, and everyone is trying to crack it. But both Eagle Eye and Mobiqa have technical know-how and experience on their side – and I for one am looking forward to seeing what kind of solution they create.
I’m also interested in the converged point of view they’re taking. By combining mobile barcodes, NFC and other mobile tech, they’re creating a really interesting all-in-one service that can apply to a huge number of devices. The first company I encountered who are pursuing that kind of solution is mobiLead – keep your eyes peeled for the GoMo interview with mobiLeads Laurent Tonnelier later today.
