MWC: Global Mobile Awards 2008

by: admin Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

I’ve just got back from the GSM’s industry’s annual bun fight - the Global Mobile Awards, and overall I’m pretty impressed by the results. It was also highly amusing that the night’s compere, Graham Norton, got in a joke at EU Comms Commissioner, Viviane Reding’s expense.

Was it a co-incidence that the GSMA Chairman’s award went to India’s Sunil Bharti Mittal of Bharti Enterprises and one of the celebrities also just so happened to be a famous Bollywood actress? I think we should be told.
It wasn’t a uneven event, though, given that most of the women present - regardless of age - seemed dead keen to meet famous US actor, Robert Redford, who was plugging made-for-mobile films.
Seeing that GoMo’s very own Bena Roberts was one of the section judges, I ought to reveal right away that her panel voted Windows Mobile 6 best mobile enterprise product or service. Plus Seven won the best mobile messaging service. Tough call.
Perhaps the closest competition was for the best mobile handset or device which actually was won by Sony Ericsson with the W910 Walkman phone. However, 3 UK’s 3 Skypephone achieved highly recommended status.
Best use of mobile for social and economic development went to Grameen Phone for CellBazaar while Crossmedia scooped the prize for best mobile advertising. Africa’s Safaricom took the best broadcast commercial prize.
For best mobile game there were two joint winners - Glu Mobile for My Hangman and Cellufun for Call of the Pharaoh. Mywaves won the best mobile video service while Yahoo! (curiously enough) was awarded the prize for best mobile entertainment.
Tha just leaves my own personal favourite winner - Omnifone- which took the top prize for best mobile music service with
MusicStation. Well done those folks.
A last plug. This story was uploaded via HSPA courtesy of a USB modem made by Huawei and kindly supplied to GoMo News by the GSMA itself. Thanks folks.
