Google’s David Thacker on the mobile user interface

I recorded David Thacker’s speech during the Mobile Ad and Search conference in London last week and just listened to it again.
I have to commend Google on the company’s corporate ability to say a lot but still not say very much! But anyway the cream of the crop of the presentation was about the user interface and how that was the vital to mobile. He touched on Android but really the whole presentation was on UI.
Just after Google’s presentation there was a panel and Vodafone’s Ray de Silva said, “We are seeing significantly higher Google click through than ever before”.
I have coupled this idea as when I listened to the presentation this is a theme that is coming out from Google again and again. Apparently Google “has not perfected the UI for searching mobile” (I add) as yet.
I think that mobile operators really care about the click through rates and also we all know that UI is a huge issue. But it’s like – don’t we know this. Why has so little changed in ten years and why is clicking such as huge problem. Even three clicks sounds like a lot when you are on a GPRS device.
But the long and short of it; Vodafone seemed over the moon with Google and David Thacker, at least seemed committed to focusing on the job in hand – solving any interface issues.
