Gemma Jones & PhoneNumber.co.uk categorise the main type of free apps
Gemma Jones writes, with tons of apps available for free in from the iTunes App Store, an iPhone need never be boring. Answering user requirements, millions of apps to entice users to download have been developed worldwide. To help consumers find their way through this minefield, we’ve come up with a Top Ten list of categories into which the majority of apps can fit. These are: – social; travel; food; audio & video; weather & news; business; finance; task management & notes; remote access; and utilities. We’ve also come up with a few suggestions and recommendations.Social
Stay in touch; share your thoughts, update or upload pictures/videos from a recent adventure; and get to know what is happening around the world with continuous free access to the social networking sites. Enjoy unrestricted access to favourite social networks like the Facebook, Twitter, Skype, Bump, LinkedIn and much more from the iTunes App stores.
Travel
If travel is an obsession, hobby or for work, then it’s possible to find some amazing travel apps available from the iTunes App store. They can help to find nearby airports and their schedules; good restaurants; and cool places to visit, and local music festivals to participate in. Examples here are apps like Google Earth, Yelp, KAYAK Flight, and TripTracker.
Food
Food-lovers who want to know places for a good meal should try the Urbanspoon app that shakes like a slot machine and the name pops up! And for those who want to try out the local specialty of food and drinks, the Happyhour app would ‘dish out’ the right place.
Audio & Video
To stream radio music to an iPad or iPhone, try out the new Pandora Radio app. Or have a look at the hottest artists and latest hits via the SoundHound app. Point the handset at the music source and it’s possible to identify (as well as buy) tracks through the Shazam app.
Weather & News
Keep updated with news and weather reports from sources like BBC News, USA Today, MSNBC, The Onion, and AccuWeather.com. To keep a tab on the news worldwide, visit the iTune store for these apps.
Business
Busy business people can make use of the technology around and check out the new voice recognition app the ‘Dragon Dictation’ which is five times faster than typing a keyboard. Make use of the currency converter app to help when travelling abroad. And those who need a job or want to employ someone, thecareerBuilder.com app will serve the purpose.
Finance
Personal finance tools are a must to manage and track a budget. PayPal is a money app which is faster than going to an ATM; or try the Mint.com where a personal account can be accessed anywhere. And those who have the Square app can sell a settee; make payment; or donate money.
Task management & notes
With an easy user interface, snapshots, recordings and more, the iTune store offers ample apps to make task management easy and taking notes flexible. Check out Evernote, EasyTask Manager, Simplenote and choose which best suits the purpose.
Remote Access
Sync and share documents; view presentations, videos and photos; and export files whether offline or online through apps such as Dropbox, Box.net, and SugarSync. No longer will forget and leave a work file at home.
Utilities
In order to make the most of the iPhone 4S, you would want an app that helps you better. A Flashlight app will help make the screen glow in darkness; dictionary.com will help in finding the right word. Plus it’s possible to connect your computer to the TV set by downloading Touch Mouse for free and to stay in control.

Great read! I definitely agree that these categories are essential for any Smartphone user! In addition to what is already on your list, I’d also say entertainment apps are greatly needed; especially for those who travel a lot on business, like I do for my job at Dish. The stresses of travel along with the hours of down-time are where those entertainment apps really come into good use. My favorite app in those situations is Dish Remote Access. It’s the best time-killer in my mind because it allows me to watch all of my favorite shows from home on my phone, live or recorded, anywhere I go in the world! When I put some games in the mix, like Angry Birds, those wait time are a piece of cake!
And you don’t even try to get in a plug for downloading Dish Remote Access. So we’ll do it for you http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/dish-remote-access/id327125649?mt=8
