Intel and LG Moorestown wide-screen mobile device isn’t just another iPhone

MWC saw Intel announce a product deal with LG, to manufacture a Moorestown mobile phone. Moorestown, the follow-up platform for Intel’s Atom processor, will be central to the wide-screen device, for which pics and videos are now circulating.

The Device:

The device is incredibly thin and long – which has already drawn criticism for not being easy to carry around. But from the looks of this, it seems more like an ultra-small laptop or notebook with voice and phone services integrated. The actual screen looks incredibly customisable, with full-qwerty keyboards and easily tabbed browsing. With the Moorestown mobile platform (more on that below), the power consumption should be tiny, meaning a huge battery-life.

Moorestown:

The Moorestown mobile platform integrates several different chips and engines. It’s designed to be incredibly small, and consume much less energy than previous chipsets. The chip is geared towards Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs), but will also be used for smartphones like the upcoming LG device.

What we think?

This doesn’t look like the now-generic iPhone model of phone. So many smartphones now on the market look the exact same, it’s really refreshing to see something that looks so different. An immediate problem is that the reason so many smartphones look the same is that the current model really works, and is incredibly popular. A lot more details will have to be released for this device before we can think about whether or not it will succeed. But for me, this early look shows something new and interesting. This is closer to being an ultra-portable computer than it is to being a smartphone. I strongly believe that the future of smartphones lies in making them closer and closer to computers, and this device looks like a strong step in the right direction.

  1. A fantastic looking device but I have to say it is exactly like a “now-generic iPhone.” It even has the iPhone silver bezel and the thin black status area at the top of the screen is very familiar. This is no bad thing, the iPhone design is a good one.

This device looks absolutely stunning and different which is indeed very refreshing. @ Paul the black status bar at the top of the phone was around long before apple even thought about getting into the phone business, I get so tired of people giving apple credit for things they didn’t invent, but they just simply include things that had already been around for years and take credit for it.
