Is Vertical Mobile Search the new black?

by: Bena Roberts Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

During Mobile World Congress search made took a slight hit on the radar. The biggest announcement were from Telia Sonera, Novarra and JumpTap as well as T-Mobile dumping Google for Yahoo! But apart from that smaller players starting talking about niche services. I heard absolutely nothing from Taptu at all and many of the mobile search companies that turned up at our party said, “vertical search is the business opportunity”.

So, to try and unearth some of the confusion about mobile search a quick definition list:
Meta Search
Meta Search is when a query is entered into the search box and spiders are set out to all indexed content. Lots of results are returned to match the query.
Federated Search
This type of search integrates sources. So it looks like a meta search engine but the information is more refined. Matches come from the categories rather than from spiders crawling everything.
The results are fewer and more likely to be more relevant.

Vertical Search
This type of search is a niche way of searching for specific industries. This allows for specialist results or search engines. Mobile advertisers love this type of search for relevant advertising

Clustered Search
This is where lots of results from information sources are found only one search box –but the results are categorised. So the results will be defined by local search, photo search etc.

Natural Language Search
This is searching for query without using a specific keyword. Its writing as you would speak do localise the query. This means “how do I”, “where do I find” what is the best” terms can be included in the query.
