Its iOS app is ideal for creating mobile friendly sites
GoMo News is always looking at ways to help readers set up with a mobile-friendly presence on the web. So when Devon Atkins – communications manager with Hamburg (Germany) based Jimdo said she was swinging past London on a whirlwind tour, we jumped at the chance. Two reasons, really. Firstly, by default all the sites you create with Jimdo’s standard CMS (content management system) are automatically optimised for the web. Secondly – and probably more importantly, Atkins was promoting the fact that the company has recently launched a version of its software suite for iOS. Meaning that Jimdo’s customers can now well and truly create a mobile-friendly web site on the go.
When Devon showed GoMo News some of the typical web sites which the company’s customers had created, it immediately made sense why Jimdo has come out with an iOS version first and will follow up with an Android version some time at a later date.
It’s clear that Jimdo’s customers have more than the average flair for design which is probably why they choose an Apple device such as an iPad over a more urbane Android product.
Besides that, of course, Jimdo’s research had found that over 50 per cent of its existing users have already tried to log in to their web sites from iPhones and/or iPads.
“So we know that there is a large market for web site building apps that provide functionality beyond blogging,” Atkins explained.
With Jimdo’s new iOS app, anyone with an Apple device can create a web site from scratch – and update pages, photos, headings, and text on the go.
JimDo is no fly-by-night operation. It was founded in Germany back in 2007 by Christian Springub, Fridtjof Detzner, and Matthias Henze.
It has been profitable since 2009 and now has premises in Hamburg, San Francisco, Tokyo, and Shanghai – all achieved without venture capital.
The important point, as Atkins pointed out, is that since 2011 the company’s web sites have all be optimised for mobile.
Jimdo also has three basic models for web site creation. There’s JimdoBusiness; JimdoPro and JimdoFree.
The third option is best described as ‘freemium’ since it is free but ad supported. Ideal for someone who just wants to get started and prove an idea/business model.
And Devon also has a gig secret. She’s also something of an artist. Take a look at her site here and see.
