Knowtate - tagging the world with talk bubbles.

Take a talk bubble, add 2 - 3 digits to it and hey presto you have Knowtate’s interactive advertising technology.

These “knowtations” as they call them enable anyone with a mobile phone to type those digits into an application and receive information, media content, reviews etc etc.

They Say: According to an article in The Industry Standard Knowtate take “index of 2-3 digit codes and ties each one to an object in a specific location. Using the location awareness capabilities of your phone (either triangulation or GPS) it knows that a knowtation with “12″ in my neighbourhood is different than the same knowtation on an object 5 miles away. By combining the index of possible numbers with geo-tagging, Knowtate can effectively re-use any of the possible 3 digit numbers to an almost infinite degree.”

Knowtake’s business model is to rent these knowtations and to charge a small transaction fee every time they are used. They hope to raise $6.5 million to get this off the ground.

We say: A novel approach when everyone else seems to be going to barcode route, Knowtation should be applauded for thinking out of the box. The only thing I wasn’t sure of was the need to install an application, getting consumers to change their habits is hard enough without expecting them to download and install an application. Surely getting an operator or handset manufacturer on-board where the application could be installed at factory level or to sell the app on an storage card for say £9..99 with discount vouchers included may be a better bet.
