Poynt is a local search application that allows retailers and businesses to reach the people living in their area. Only available on iPhone and Blackberry until now, Poynt has just announced its arrival in the Android Market. What can Android owners expect?
What does Poynt do?
For a user, Poynt provides local answers to search queries on your mobile. If you’re looking for a place to eat, movie timetables, new clothes or a gig to go to, Poynt will use your location to return queries for things happening near you. It’s built in handy extras as well, like local gas prices and a 5-day weather report. It’s got good integration with the Android OS as well, so once you’ve found what you’re looking for, you can click-to-call. And, since this is Android, it’ll search by voice using the indigenous voice-to-text function.
What we think?
Poynt is doing pretty well for itself – it reported over 22 million searches per month by May of this year. I imagine this launch will do as well for Poynt in terms of advertising as it will in search numbers. There are upwards of 8 million Android users in the States alone, all of which can be served advertising along with their search results – location-based advertiser Ping Mobile recently announced that it would be serving ads through the Poynt platform. And this is an essential step for Poynt – it’s a free application.
