Loopt partners with Qualcomm for LBS

Posted by Bena Roberts on Nov 10, 2008 11:53

Social mapping player Loopt has partners with SnapTrack a subsidiary of Qualcomm.

What for?
For the use of its location based server software called QPoint.

Why?
This QPoint server will enable mobile operators to enhance their LBS services because QPoint ensures greater accuracy in targeting locations and positions.

From the press release:

“The accuracy of GPS intensive applications like ours is dependent on frequent use of location-based information and QPoint helps enable the use of location applications in a cost effective manner,” said Sam Altman, co-founder and chief executive officer of Loopt.  “We’re excited to use QPoint location server software to help drive the LBS industry forward.”
“As location-based services become more prevalent, frequent access to precise location information will be a necessity,” said Richard Bachand, vice president of Intellectual Property for SnapTrack. “We are pleased that Loopt, a leader in location applications and services, is working to help make this a reality.”

What we think?
I as many are waiting for the LBS explosion. Whilst I like social mapping and the Loopt agenda I remain cautious on the accuracy of mobile LBS services. If this helps Loopt it is great. But is there an additional cost for the consumer? Can operators afford to invest still more money into LBS. What happened to GPS taking off?

As far as I am concerned LBS has been an apple in the eye of mobile for so long but consumer demands seem to prefer pears.
