Magnet Harlequin- another pea in the mobile barcode and visual mobile search pod?

by: Bena Roberts Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

Mobile barcodes are hot. Mobile visual search is hot. Scott Seaborn of Magnet Harlequin pressed both of those buttons today with his presentation at the mobile marketing forum.

Apparently also ex-NeoMedia investment Mobot is also a partner with the company and Scott rolled out the who is who of mobile visual, search and barcodes.

The presentation was great - but not new. This is just another thorn or chain in the barcode and visual mobile search market and I stood up and asked Scott what the companies value add was. He said he enjoyed competition in the market and embraced it as all of these services were nearing tipping point.

I think that Magnet Harlequin join the Mobile Acuity, SnapNow, SnapTell, Kooaba, Mobile Acuity, Neomedia, Scanbuy, Abaxia et. al race.

The race is getting hotter, I will interview Scott shortly, but differentiation in this space is lacking in mobile.

WHAT WE NEED

We need real proof of mobile visual search. Mobot needs to team with the likes of Medio, Jumptap and so does NeoMedia. The term search is very loose in visual search and in barcodes.

To drive this industry we need visual recommendation engines, search features, results for when a barcode is not foundĀ  etc. As anyone who took a picture of the Cajamadrid (not sure of spelling) barcode today after the presentation - the code didn’t work when pictured and sent and the feed back was zero.

This is unacceptable.
