Manchester United Football Club, Visual Mobile Search and O2’s Mike Short

by: Bena Roberts Thursday, April 17th, 2008

I had an excellent chat with Mike Dunphy Mobile Guru of football club Manchester Unitedat the Mobile Marketing Forum. Then we had a drink together again in the evening and I took a short video with him. Unfortunately, it’s not brilliant and he only gets to say his name. The second video was with O2’s Mike Short and Mike Dunphy and it was so much fun. Mike Short was actually being really funny and calling me the best mobile blogger of the universe - I think we all even managed a few football songs. I felt a bit like Perez Hilton. I am so upset that it didn’t upload - but my battery did also die on me and I think that the video got lost on the plane in-between the UK and Germany.

However, it is not often the R&D Guru of O2 bigs up start-up blog GoMo News and I hope it won’t be the last. But anyway.

Why did I want to chat with Manchester United?

Well. I followed Manchester United to every away game in 1999 when they won the Champions League and I saw Mike as a way of getting into the Director’s box!

No. Seriously. It was great to see a brand and a sports brand at the Mobile Marketing Forum. There was a lot of talk at the conference on Halo Brands leading mobile advertising to the next level - I wanted to know if Manchester United was one of them.

The second words after meeting Mike (ManU) that came out of my mouth

- do you have an actual mobile services or 2.0 strategy. He smiled and said, “I can’t tell you”. I primed him for more information. I wasn’t getting far, until I got all tactical.

So I tried my best to talk about every single sports related mobile service in the world to get some insight. I think this worked and Mike realised that I wasn’t after a scoop but I really was interested.

What amazed me is that he knew what mobile visual search was? I can’t say anymore (I promised), but I think we can expect some very innovative services from Manchester United moving forward.
