Rating: dispelling the mobile myths

By Bena Roberts

So, I never know where to sit when I am at these conferences at lunch time. But this time I made a wise choice and I ended up next to Alex Gordy Strategic Marketing Director for Andrew Corporation. We spoke briefly about what we did and then we jointly bitched about how the Google presentation had been changed without notice – so we both missed it.

But anyway, I asked Alex why he wanted to speak with Google and what his intentions were. He basically responded that he was a huge Google fan and Google Mobile Maps was the best thing that happened since sliced bread.

I smiled as I said to him; Google Mobile Maps doesn’t work. He responded to my challenge well and pulled out his Blackberry to show me how fantastic the new feature is brilliant and it works in Hong Kong with no problem. I didn’t believe him so I asked him to perform a simple test for me to see if it would work.

I asked him to type in Grand Hyatt into the search. He did and the Four Seasons came up. He said, he wasn’t sure why this was. I told him it’s because the Four Seasons is an advertiser and the Grand Hyatt is not. He didn’t believe me.

Luckily Richard Saggers from Vodafone also sat down with us – so I asked him. He confirmed and said, “of course”. Then he gave Alex a test. He said type in hotels into the search and see what happens? It should be covered in little dots because there are thousands of hotels in the area.

So he did and guess what happened? Only six hotels came up.

Now I have to say, I felt slightly guilty as Alex was sort of shocked that mobile advertising hits the market at this stage within Google Mobile Maps. But actually it’s an honest mistake for fans of Google not to realise that Google is in fact an advertising company first and foremost.

But anyway, according to Alex, hot things are coming out of Andrew in the next few months and strong applications are being launched. I should be a BETA tester and more from the delightful Alex (a lovely lunch partner) in the future.
