Rating: what a load of Microsoft

By Bena Roberts

1. Users of MSN Mobile will start to see display ads, banners and text format
2. New content services will also be delivered such as buy movie tickets, ringtones and astrology services.

What we think?
1. Catch-up Microsoft; everyone else has been doing this for months.
2. Does anyone actually use MSN Mobile? I saw, I saw again but stick – I did not.
3. NEW CONTENT SERVICES – ringtones and astrology? Are you joking? Adding ringtone and astrology services to a mobile portal is about as new as adding milk in your tea. No – actually at least milk in your tea tastes nice.
4. Am I being rude?
5. Um.. tough one – but the answer is yes.

Why?
This is codswallop. MSN has the oar in the online world but it mobile it has no clue. Its ad inventory is probably also dire and the fact that it pitches its new display ads on mobile next to additional content services – seems to us that it’s a guise for “home grow traffic and ad-inventory”. But the icing on the cake is that the content services pushed are so backward.

I mean, Microsoft. Why not push courses, MCSE, books, applications, Vista or something that might actually interest users of mobile devices and not just (has been, available on every mobile portal, content and ringtones and (wait for it) astrology).

I am exasperated at the stupidity. There is a lack of information that people actually want and need on mobile – for some reason everyone thinks the answer is ringtones and astrology – when new services are the only way forward.
