MMS might finally come to iPhone from Mobispine

Tagline: App developer pre-empts function many hoped would appear in iPhone OS 2.2

Despite it’s many, many positive points, there were always some weird absences from the iPhone’s list of text functions. Forwarding messages was one. Another was MMS. App developer Juicecaster released Flutter, a free picture messaging service designed for the iPhone, but true MMS was still missing. Mobispine have declared that they’ve filled that hole.

True MMS?

The problem with the Flutter service was that it was routed through Juicecasters servers. It was closer to email than it was to MMS, and Flutter themselves received many requests to change this. Mobispine are offering an app that sends proper MMS. Texts with pictures embedded in them that will go through direct routes, over any service provider, with the same speed and convenience of an SMS. What’s more, the app would communicate directly with iPhone’s on-board services. Pics from cameraphone and entries in the contacts book would have MMS functions added to them.

From the Press Release:

“Mobispine continues its strong track record of innovation and is proud to unveil the first true MMS service for iPhones. We are confident that global operators will find Mobispine’s MMS service for iPhone easy-to-use and profitable,” said Dusyant Patel, CEO, Mobispine. “This new offering will help operators generate revenue and differentiate their offerings in a highly competitive market.”

What we think?

The first question I had was “surely Apple would want to do this themselves?”

Sure enough, when I went looking, that was the question that seemed most on everyone’s mind. Apple have not yet made any statement concerning this new app. If they consider it to be a threat they could kill this app before it goes anywhere. WIthout permission to sell over the iPhone AppStore it will fizzle and die. To a great extent, the future of this product depends on whether Apple is developing their own MMS function for the fast approaching iPhone OS 2.2
