BarcodeZilla is a Windows Mobile app based on Google’s ZXing programme, which is dedicated to putting barcode scanning functions on ANY device – even those without a net connection. BarcodeZilla scans the most common product barcodes, EAN-8, EAN-13 and UPC, and retrieves product information and a click-to-purchase link.
This is very definitely an “indie” application. It allows any user to upload and edit information about a product they have scanned – particularly country-specific information. The “off-line” aspect only applies to products which you have already viewed or scanned, as the app stores this information and lets you view it any time.
What we think?
The indie cred of this app couldn’t be more evident – you even have to download additional software to get it to work. One thing I found very amusing was that when I ran a text-based search on the service. it provided all the same information…. along with an image of the barcode for the product! So, for example, if you wanted to check a product on ShopSavvy or Google Product Search when you’re not in the shop, you could pull up the barcode on BarcodeZilla. Provided you have a friend with a barcode scanner, of course.
