Mobile email provider Momail launches Twitter service

Momail launched Twitter support for its mobile email product today. Momail subscribers can send and recieve Tweets via email, as well as uploading pics to their Twitter streams.

Once you’ve activated your Twitter function on Momail, you can send the familiar 140 characters to twitter@momail.com - and that will post your tweet for you. To post a twitter picture, just attach to the mail. You can also request an email containing the last 20 tweets from your contacts, by sending a mail with the subject line “friends”.

From the release:

“We’re excited that Momail users can now easily post to and receive updates from their contacts at Twitter. It’s an even better solution than posting via SMS or the mobile internet when you’re on the go – especially as you can also post mobile pictures and video to Twitter with Momail. It’s the perfect solution for staying in touch over the summer holidays”, says Kenneth Lundin, CEO of Momail.

What we think?

Hum. Doesn’t Twitter already have an “update via phone” function? It’s one of the most basic features of twitter - you SMS it and it does your update for you. Likewise with the pictures. The bit about getting the last 20 tweets from your friends is a good idea… or at least it would be if most people didn’t have hundreds of friends on Twitter. Getting the last 20 tweets is unlikely to get you anything relevant. Now, if they had a function whereby you could request the tweets of a SPECIFIC friend, that might be worth something.

Momail are pretty sharp when it comes to social networking, but ultimately this falls prey to the biggest problem with Twitter - it is too complex a beast to properly manage via a mobile. To use Twitter properly, you need a decent client on a real computer.

Hum. How do you SMS pictures and videos?

With email you can attach “any” format. Also as example, an email message vs. a text message (SMS) is much cheaper if you don’t have a nice plan with your operator.
