Mobile Marketing Forum, Barcelona: we ARE still in Kansas
Rating: if ever a wiz there was?
By Annie Turner
Last time I saw the always cheerful John Styers he was the outgoing general manager of the Sprint Mobile Media Network. He’s remained in Kansas, but now is a partner in Moblico and he told me today:
“We have three areas of activity. First of all we act as Mobile Advisor, usually to vc-funded start-ups who are looking for people with experience to guide them. We are also a Mobile Catalyst, bringing people with good ideas into the market. Thirdly we offer Mobile Marketing services, but there is not too much of that going around at the moment, plus it’s too time-consuming.”
As an example of a company Mobilico is interested in, John did a quick advert for Watermark which enables consumers, with a suitably armed phone, click on a poster with Watermark’s technology embedded in it (the example was for the film Over the Hedge) and go straight to the WAP sites. No shotcode or barcodes involved – yeah, but you still have to have the bit of software on your phone and the lack of handset clients is why shotcodes, QR codes and all the rest of them are languishing everywhere except for parts of Asia.

Just to be clear, the Mobile Data Systems application utilized to read the watermarks is the same application that reads the QR codes, Dot Matrix, 1D and 30 other symbologies. This client can also “hear” an audiomark, an embedded bit of audio code that is hiding in a radio, tv or any other audible transmission. When recognized, the phone will automatically launch a WAP site, video clip, etc. The value of this technology is that one client can do so much more than the single, dedicated, proprietary clients currently being promoted in the market. Open standard codes are far more compelling to provide an industry play.
