Mobile operators need to act to combat OTT rivals

Rating: Research from Acision shows appetite for rich messaging

New research from Acision, has revealed that mobile operators are missing out an opportunity to enrich the mobile messaging experience they provide to subscribers. They could easily enhance applications and services in the smartphone/tablet arena. Acision’s research indicates that there is a clear appetite for a rich, ubiquitous messaging service provided from operators. The research also reveals that operators can provide an unrivalled user experience by enabling seamless messaging across all networks (2G, 3G, 4G/LTE).The survey questioned 1,250 smartphones users about their messaging requirements.

It found that …

  • 52 per cent of smartphone users would be interested in using a new all-in-one operator based service that provided SMS/MMS/IM/group chat and file/video sharing
  • Price, already identified as the main driver to OTT service uptake, was also the number one requirement for adoption of a new rich messaging service, followed by quality of service and reliability
