Google has revealed some interesting stats for mobile video today. According to the Google Mobile Ads Blog, 75% of YouTube Mobile users say that their mobile is the number one device they use to watch YouTube videos.
What’s the story?
In response to a growing number of people accessing their videos through m.youtube.com, Google ran a survey on the mobile site. They got over 16,000 responses, and published the main findings:
• 75% said mobile is their primary YouTube access
• 70% use the mobile site at least once a day
• 58% spend 20+ minutes per visit
• 38% are happy to say that their on-line use of YouTube is being replaced by YouTube Mobile
What we think?
It’s no surprise that this survey was published on Google’s mobile advertising blog. The main thrust of the release is to drive at advertisers the message that Google is a great place to advertise. The blog mentions a Nielsen report showing that there are over 7 million monthly users of YouTube mobile, and reminds us that an advertiser can bulk purchase all available advertising slots on YouTube Mobile for 24 hours, in an ad deal called a “daily roadblock”.
And it’s hard to blame them! Even on year ago, most people weren’t sure whether mobile video or mobile TV was going to be a runner. These days it seems almost inevitable. Realistic data rates, improving network speeds and higher quality handsets have all been boosting the attractiveness of mobile video to users. The growing prevalence of Wi-Fi hotspots, along with services like Boingo that make them easier to find, is also a contributing factor. What would really interest me is to find out how many of the daily users of YouTube Mobile wait until they’re in a hotspot to use the site, or if they stream the videos across their 3G network – with the associated expense for the data plan.
GoMo News had a great interview with Tina Kaichis, Director at mobile video and TV specialist QuickPlay, about these topics and more. Check back tomorrow, when it will be up as one of our featured articles for the day.
