Mobile Web Americas conference, Orlando: MySpace my foot
Rating: mobile’s social, stupid
By Annie Turner
David Harper, founder of Winksite and founder of Mobile Monday New York argued very convincingly that talking about moving MySpace et al onto mobile is to entirely miss the point about what mobile brings to social networking. He explained that his company is not simply about offering a landing page type of web site where you talk to your mates, but somewhere where members can mash-up whatever they want from wherever they want – RSS feeds, the web, mobile stuff etc on the spot, whenever they want. Beat that, PC.
Myk (Mike) Willis, founder and CEO of myxer pointed out that there’s nothing about social networking on a PC on your own in a darkened room. Couldn’t agree more, it’s one of the things that always puts me off too – I’d rather be down the pub talking to real people. However flash mobs are rapidly becoming part of scene, according to Myk whose colleague left in a hurry a couple of weeks ago when they were at a tech crunch(!) in California, explaining that he’s just got an SMS from his Twitter group saying that they were having an impromtu Tweet Up and he had to flutter off to join it.
Dan Rosen of Rave (which provides services for specific colleges on behalf of Sprint) said just about the most sensible thing I’ve ever heard anyone say about LBS – that it should be for finding people you know when you’re at a big bash or party instead of a free bloody pizza as you’re passing Domino’s door.
