Mobile 2.0: Yahoo!

by: Bena Roberts Saturday, June 14th, 2008

Yahoo!’s Gerrit Muller was asked to speak about discovery on mobile. I got really excited as I thought he was going to speak about mobile search optimisation and how to get to the top of Yahoo! oneSearch.

How wrong I was!

What we got was an outline of Yahoo! Go and oneSearch and how it was the key to discovery. He showed Yahoo! services and the integration of widgets on Yahoo! It implied to me that to get on Yahoo! you need to pay for it.

On top of that - what was shown was clearly a closed garden - monolithic Yahoo! After his presentation (which was very very good - but just very evangelistic). So I asked the first question as Chairman, “Haven’t you just created a mobile operator portal with Yahoo!?”.

His response was “no - this is better more flexibe and enables interaction”.

So anyway, Yahoo! was also accused several times in the two days of buying its way in to Mobile Operators. I don’t know if its true. So am not endorsing it - but saying that a few competitors and individuals said that Yahoo! paid to be on O2.
