MobileTag, the AFMM and French Mobile Barcode Standardisation

by: Bena Roberts Monday, March 3rd, 2008

I just got this from French Company Mobile Tag (formerly part of Abaxia).

A major step has been achieved in the standardization of the 2D Barcode.

The mobiletag company, the AFMM (French Association of Mobile Multimedia) and the 3 French mobile operators, Orange, SFR and Bouygues, have signed a mutual license contract concerning the specifications of the 2D Barcode Flashcode.

Mobiletag, managed by Domenico SURACE, is a French company that proposes a global solution regrouping:
 The creation and management of barcodes
 The readers and applications for mobiles
 A platform for managing information

Mobiletag: a global solution
The tag, also referred to as the 2D barcode or flashcode
The tag is an intelligent bar code read by mobile phones
 Datamatrix: the European standard ISO/IEC 16022: 2000 (E) ECC 200
 A standard certified by the European market
 Interoperability with multiple operators

The tag reader
 Integration compatible with all constructors
 The reader and the application are directly embedded in mobile phones
               during their construction

Tag creation and platform management
 Simple, fast and customized access
 Back office interface for managing contents

What we think?
Well France has been the leader in Europe in terms of supporting and using mobile barcodes. The first move in Standaridsation is then not a surprise.
But Mobile Tag has also changed its tune. Only six months ago I wrote a huge article on Mobile Tag vs NeoMedia. But now MobileTag is changing its tune.

Is standardisation of mobile barcodes winning? It does seem so.

Viva le barcode!

Bena,

What is the status of Scanbuy with respect to Mobile Tag (Abaxia), the AFMM, and the 3 French mobile operators, Orange, SFR and Bouygues, signing a mutual license contract concerning the specifications of the 2D Barcode Flashcode?

According to your December 2007 interview with Scanbuy CEO Jonathan Bulkeley, “I think that Abaxia’s claims are overblown. The French code platform is Scanbuy’s. The AFMM the association of French mobile marketers is using the Scanbuy software and the platform. So Abaxia does not own the market.”

Jonathan Bulkeley seems pretty confident that the French market belongs to Scanbuy.

I’d be interested in hearing Mr. Bulkeley’s thoughts on this recent development. Will Scanbuy’s Hotscan application (as it is called in France) be able to read and decipher the newly standardized 2D Data Matrix Flashcode?

Best,
Sean
