Mobility World Congress - TIM Gianluca Zaffiro on social presence

Rating: Innovating and improving the social presence

By Bena Roberts

Firstly, I must clarify this is not presence as associated with instant messaging. Gianluca Zaffiro talked at length about understanding human interfaces and substituting the illusion of the real world vs machine.

What?
Yep. Telecom Italia seems to be taking social media very seriously and in order to create the right mobile experience its going mad on user testing to understand interaction.

Basically TIM is testing social networks and services via presentation interface and monitoring of human interaction. This is the save the information and to re-create the experience for mobile. This analysis will then be used to develop mobile experiences that lock in and deliver what consumers want.

What we think?
Wow. Is this necessary? I understand the demand for personal avatars and digital assistants but the extent of this new project could kill the product. It’s a question of whether or not the mobile experience should replicate online or if it should be unique.

Anyone that knows and reads GoMo regularly (2500 people a day) will know the answer to that one.

Gianluca Zaffiro Said:

I personally agree we (TelCos) have to be very careful to avoid providing services or even just features that people don’t really want or need. Anyway let me remind that Presence and Social Presence are still at their infancy and R&D phase (e.g. PEACH project). I believe that in the next years we will see a constant adoption of new solutions from this disciplines. And the mobile experience will benefit (and accordingly change) also from the Mobile - Computer convergence…
