Coldplay and Babelgum have expanded their mobile content relationship. Coldplay have joined such other luminaries as Paris Hilton and MC Hammer in the ranks of celebs with their own mobile games/apps. In this case, Babelgum has launched a free mobile application for iPhone that contains a Coldplay-related mobile game, video catalogue and news feed.
Babelgum is an independent mobile content developer, which used to focus mainly on mobile TV. The game it has developed for Coldplay is based on the bands most recent music video, and features such oddities as Chris Martin battling giant squirrels. The app will also update it’s news feed daily for Coldplay fans, and will feature competitions giving users the chance to win tickets to Coldplay gigs.
You can download the app from Babelgum www.babelgum.com/coldplay or iTunes
From the release:
Jason Lamont, Babelgum’s Head of Music: “Babelgum’s music channel is continuing to produce and deliver exciting content exclusively to our audience before anyone else. The application and partnership with Coldplay positions Babelgum as a destination for the best in music, in line with our commitment to deliver innovative, professionally produced programming to a global audience”
What we think?
This app would have been pretty standard fare if it wasn’t for the mobile game thrown in there. As mentioned above, MC Hammer was on this trend a long time ago. His app containted live news feeds and competitions months ago. Publicists do seem to have decided that combining celebrity branding with mobile gaming is a good way to promote both of them… we’ll see. Coldplay already had some video content available for free on Babelgum (http://www.gomonews.com/vodafone-and-babelgum-launch-free-mobile-video-service/ ), so it must have attracted enough publicity for it to be worth extending the relationship.
