More NeoMedia Changes as Dr. Christian Steinborn becomes new COO
Rating: changing to move forward
As a very early follower of Neomedia, I have seen the company transform from buy it all mode to sell it all mode to now what I call “focus” mode.
The bullish NeoMedia that managed stamped on the small fish is being replaced by a sleeker management team and a stronger mission. Barcodes rule and NeoMedia is eager to be the major player in the standardisation of barcodes moving forward.
Hence, the CEO of Gavitec (aka Mobile Digit) Dr. Christian Steinborn will now become the COO of NeoMedia.
According to Dr. Steinborn, “The key to future growth is our ability to create high-quality innovative products and to understand our customer’s individual requirements and needs.”
My only concern is that do mobile operators care about barcode standardisation or do they relish in exclusivity.
Me thinks… exclusivity…

Great post
Question: wouldn’t mobile operator exclusivity fragment the mobile code-reading space?
Lets say Verizon partners with Nextcode and uses their proprietary mCode platform. And lets say Scanbuy partners with Sprint who uses their proprietary eZcode platform.
As a consumer, why would I want to install multiple barcode readers on my phone just to be able to read all the 2D codes that would be floating around in the fragmented marketplace.
NeoMedia Technologies, Gavitec, and the members of MC2 (HP, Publicis, Nokia, Deutsche Telekom, O2, and KPN) have set out to standardize the mobile code reading space.
NeoMedia will soon be announcing the release of their NeoReader (universal code reader) based off the award winning Lavasphere technology developed in Germany by Gavitec. The NeoReader reads all common non-proprietary 2D codes (Data Matrix, QR, and Aztec) as well as URL embedded 2D codes and all 1D UPC open source codes. This allows the NeoReader user to click on a variety of codes with a single application installed.
