Motorola adds DeviceAnywhere platform to the MOTODEV mobile application community

DeviceAnywhere today announced a partnership with Motorola to launch the new Motorola Virtual Developer Lab. The internet-based testing service would reduce the time and resources required to fully develop and deploy appss and content for Motorola handsets.

The Motorola Virtual Developer Lab is the newest addition to the MOTODEV mobile application and content developer community. The Virtual Developer Lab, powered by DeviceAnywhere, will give members remote access to 40 mobile handsets using a simple desktop interface available via the Internet. The Lab allows developers to interact with devices as if they were in their hands. This includes pressing buttons, tapping on touch screens, connecting/disconnecting the battery, viewing the LCD, listening to ringers and speakers, and opening/closing a handset.

From the release:

“The mobile device is at the core of peoples every day lives, keeping them connected to timely information and allowing them to perform critical tasks,” said Christy Wyatt, Vice President, Software Platforms and Ecosystem, Motorola.  “As a result, consumer demand for sophisticated mobile applications and content shows no signs of slowing down and – subsequently – it is imperative that mobile operators, handset manufacturers and platform providers continue to feed this demand with increasingly advanced devices and mobile applications.”

“As the mobile industry continues its rapid global expansion, it becomes increasingly difficult for mobile application developers worldwide to keep up with the multitude of  handsets – and just as difficult for operators, handset manufacturers and platform providers to ensure that their developer communities have access to devices,” said Faraz Syed, CEO and co-founder for DeviceAnywhere.  “Motorola has recognized the significant value that DeviceAnywhere can bring to its developer community through the Virtual Developer Lab and we are thrilled to partner with the company in this endeavour.”

What we think?

This is an amazing tool for developers who want to produce content for Motorola handsets. As proven by iPhone apps, the majority of content for mobiles in the future is probably going to be developed by third-party companies. If Motorola can create a well-equipped, well-educated community of developers creating content for its handsets, it will be much richer for it. Unusually, Motorola is behind the curve on this one. Amongst others, Nokia and T-Mobile cut deals like this some time ago.
