Motorola throws lifeline to Droid 2.2 (Froyo) wannabes

Such is the enthusiasm for news concerning a release date for the 2.2 (Froyo) version of Android for the Motorola Droid, that Motorola has created a special thread on its support forum. A posting entitled ‘Follow this thread for news about Android 2.2 for Droid’ – giving details on how to receive email notification – has had an impressive 26,260 views.

motorola_logoThe catch is that you have to sign into the support forum first before the email notification button becomes visible. It’s a different option from the one which says ‘sign up for email updates’, too.

GoMo News had a false alarm when we saw a message upon loading Motorola’s Media Link software which said that an update was available.

This turned out to be an update to the Media Link package itself.  Such a disappointment.

Within Media Link there is an option to check for handset upgrades. Select this option and it takes you to Motorola’s site where it asks you for your current location.

If you pick the UK like we did, mysteriously the Dext MB220 (which is the Brit name for the Droid) isn’t one of the options. Strange because it appears as an option if you search for accessories.

There’s an alternative and that is to download a copy of the Motorola Software Update’ application from the Motorola support site. This duly informs you that there is no update available (still).

Fans of our earlier story here will have noticed that one avid reader challenged GoMo News to go ahead with the unofficial hack.

Well, we made an attempt to ‘root’ our handset (the Android equivalent of an iPhone jailbreak) following the instructions supplied here. Sadly holding own the ‘X’ key while rebooting doesn’t work.

Perhaps it is different on a Dext as opposed to a Droid. So now we’ll just have to wait until the official update to 2.2 arrives.

You must not have fully read the instructions to root your droid. Holding X before powering on and during reboot is only part of the process.

the reason it didnt work is because the mb220 isnt the droid. It is the motorola cliq over here for t-mobile. look into obtaining root for a moto cliq, I dont know if it will be harder to find roms for it due to the fact that the mb220 runs moto blur. however you would fare better looking into how to obtain root for the motorola cliq.
