Music Search and Discovery with SonyEricsson and Gracenote

Gracenote is an extremely interesting company, it powers Yahoo!’s lyric search and also KDDI’s radio music search in Japan. With a focus on music search and discovery, Gracenote is riding on a tidal wave.

Yesterday, SonyEricsson and Gracenote teamed up a suite of mobile music services that will enable music search, artist or lyric discovery and mood analysis in order to manage and serve playlists to consumers.

The first Sony Ericsson phones to feature Media Manager are the W910 Walkman® phone, the W960 Walkman® phone and the K850 Cyber-shot(TM) phone

The main concepts are:
SenseMe – indexes music by genre and type in order to perform a music analysis on the “mood” of a listener and then come back with the appropriate playlist.
Music Transfer – enables users to select a single track from an album to transfer it to the mobile in a drag and drop style.
Music Playlist – enables users to pre-determine what they listen to and when – so they can plan music for journeys.
Media Feeds – Podcasts are king and now users can subscribe to podcasts feeds.
Track ID – allows users to record the song with the phone’s microphone and then the name and artist will appear on the phone screen. This is similar to the radio service in Japan from Gracenote and can be used in conjunction with the radio as well.
