Namibia Tourism has launched a mobile website with dotMobi to make Namibia more attractive to tourists. Created by mobile marketing company Yonder Media, the “Discover Namibia” mobi site contains information which will make visiting and exploring the country much easier.
The site has info on entry requirements to the country, advice on safe traveling, tours, the top tourist attractions and package deals.
Yonder Media chose dotMobi because they claimed it was the simplest and most cost effective method to add mobile to Namibia Tourism’s digital advertising spend – and also the cheapest way for browsers to access the site.
From the release:
“Currently the mobi site is an introduction to Namibia as a destination,” said Chantal Matthee, Manager – Namibia Tourism Board, Johannesburg, “viewers can look forward to a virtual Namibia with added information at the click of a button.”
What we think?
I should create some kind of “Over-The-Top Award” for press releases. This would definitely be a contender. Check out this excerpt: “This new and innovative way to bring a country’s best attributes to any mobile could shake the way the travel industry currently operates.” I wouldn’t call either mobi sites or tourist info on mobile innovative. A much more “innovative” service was launched for SIM cards in Vietnam just last Friday.
Still, the site isn’t half bad. If you browse around, it’s got a lot of useful advice for visitors. One thing the release states is that “a mobi site becomes more than just a nice add-on for travellers, but an essential one.” As more and more tourism services are launched on mobile, your mobile device really is becoming an essential tourism tool.

Really location based info is more likely to “shake” the way the travel industry operates… people may be far less reliant on search and even websites.
