NeoMedia’s view on Google 2D Barcodes

I gave Iain McCready CEO of NeoMedia a call just now to ask about his view on Google’s move  into 2D barcodes and local mobile search. This is what we spoke about:

Bena:  Hi Iain, sorry to disturb you, but I wanted five minutes of your time on a Google 2D mobile barcode story.

Iain:  Bena, are you well? (I won’t bore everyone with this part of the chat but I do thank everyone again for being so supportive)

Bena:  So, you know that Google launched this 2D barcode Places service last week.

Iain: Yes.

Bena: What is your opinion?

Iain:  Fantastic. I think you wrote yourself about how Google didn’t succeed in 2D print barcodes earlier this year. So, I am delighted to see them back in the space and it is enormous endorsement for 2D codes altogether.

Bena: So you are positive?

Iain:  Absolutely. This market has amazing potential and Google is a huge player. We, I, NeoMedia hopes that they are very successful and this time the ambition is achieved. We are an open company and we want to support the growth and advancement of every 2D code and every player in the mobile barcode space.

Bena: So, you are not going to jump and scream “we own the patents?”

Iain:  (Laughs). No, Bena. We want Google 2D codes to be a success and when they and all the other players see and relish the success of the services – then they will contact us. We are ready, eager and available to work with anyone in anytime and under any terms. I wish Google 2D codes amazing success and can’t wait to work with them. The media attention Google commands can only help every player in the market.

Bena: Yikes, Iain. I am loving this open and friendly collaborative view. That really will help the market.
