New mobile device unveiled by LG, the Arena KM900

LG Electronics has released a few details about it’s upcoming mobile device, ahead of the official launch at Mobile World Congress. The Arena KM900 is touted as LGs “flagship” mobile of 2009. While details are very scarce what we’ve seen so far looks pretty good.

The body looks pretty standard for a modern smartphone. Very slim, and with an iPhone style touchscreen covering one entire side. The most out of the ordinary part so far is the “3D” S-Class UI, which uses a a cube-based layout. The user can switch screens within the 3D UI by turning from one face of the cube to the next. I assume this is to provide access to as many features as possible from the home screen.

Specs:

Very few details so far, but this is what LG has released: Dolby and Divx support, HSDPA (High-speed Downlink Packet Access) data at 7.2Mbps, Wi-Fi and GPS.

From the release:

“The direct, intuitive and dynamic S-Class UI will be unlike anything that has appeared on a mobile phone before. With rich 3D graphics, touch sensitivity and exciting multimedia capabilities, it will truly make ARENA a fully loaded multimedia phone,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company.

What we think?

It’s a nice looking phone, certainly, and it’s similarity to the iPhone will make it feel instantly familiar. It’s good that it accesses both WiFi and HSDPA – one of the complaints about the XX was that it didn’t have enough connectivity. There’s no details yet on how its camera will operate, though from the picture above it definitely has one. I’m actually quite interested in this “cube” display for the UI. If the touch gestures are intuitive enough it’ll allow really fast access to a six different screens, which is perfect for people with widget/app clutter.
