Pepsi seems to be going QR code crazy with its third in a series of mobile visual search and mobile barcode campaigns. I quite like the analogy of old and new media with Pepsi’s visionary ad campaign.

Without saying it - its like Coke is old media with its traditional “holiday’s are coming” commercials and Pepsi is new media - with iconic images, codes and people. So in drink terms Pepsi is the new cool.

If you would like to generate QR Code images yourself, you can do so here.

Brands get some great marketing from Pepsi’s initiative with QR codes. But, for those brands wanting to get the best of both worlds - mobile technology can also offer brand protection, anti-counterfeit and track & trace.

..and guess what, all from a single 2D code - i.e. secure data for the above enterprise solutions whilst enabling the ‘marketeers’ to reach the public. The other benefit, which any brand will fully appreciate, is the size of the codes - if, for example, a 2D DataMatrix Code is used it can be say 10mm x 10mm and still contain all the data in the Pepsi Code …and also do all the secure functions mentioned above.

The conclusion - speak to the leading developers of these enterprise solutions to truly understand the potential - the agencies are great at the marketing. But, for intelligent, long term and valuable enterprise applications look deeper - simply connecting to url’s from a code is, and will continue to be, a free service. There’s a lot more to come from Mobile Barcodes and Optical reading with Mobile.

    Mark,

I am curious to know if UpCode uses direct encoding (URL) or indirect encoding (Unique Identifier) for their 2D Data Matrix codes?

Indirect encoding (patented by NeoMedia) is the process of linking the target information to an index (364528 for example) and encoding that unique identifier into a 1D UPC/EAN or 2D barcode. The code reader on the mobile phone reads the barcode and sends the code data over the Internet to a central resolution server that will tell the mobile phone what action is associated with the index, i.e. access a URL, comparison shop, download media, initiate a phone call, ect.

To find out, I used Jaxo’s Bar Capture to decode the following UpCode Data Matrix codes and each one was encoded with a unique identifier.

Mark, is UpCode infringing on NeoMedia’s patents?
