Lastminute.com and software developers Coolgorilla will be making their Talking Mobile Phrase Books available to download absolutely free in time for this year’s summer holiday season. They are available in French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese and Greek.

Once downloaded to your phone, each phrase book provides a structured menu system in English, covering various topics from Travel, Accommodation, Shopping and Romance. (They want couples to be able to understand each other?!!!)

Find the required phrase, press select and the mobile phone “speaks” the phrase using the recordings of real, native voice-over artists in addition to supplying a text translation on screen.

I dunno, that terribly British thing of believing that everyone understands English really, if only you shout it loud enough is one of the hallmarks of Britons on holiday, along with prodigious alcohol consumption. We Brits attempting to talk another language proper would be a bit like Wimbledon without the rain. They’ll be putting a roof on Centre Court next.
