Nokia has acquired all assets of Twango.

Twango who?
Twango provides media sharing solution for organizing photos, videos and personal media.

Why?
This is a strategic purchase by Nokia. Now it can provide consumers with a service allowing them to share multimedia content via the PC on mobile.

From the press release
“The Twango acquisition is a concrete step towards our Internet services vision of providing seamless access to information, entertainment, and social networks - at anytime, anywhere, from any connected device, in any way that you choose. We have the most complete suite of connected multimedia experiences including music, navigation, games, and - with the Twango acquisition - photos, videos, and a variety of document types,” said Anssi Vanjoki, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Multimedia, Nokia. “When you combine a Nokia Nseries multimedia computer that is always on, always connected, and always with you together with a rich media sharing destination like Twango, people will have exciting new ways to create and enjoy rich media experiences in real time.”

“Nokia’s unique vision for social media aligns perfectly with Twango,” said Twango co-founder, Jim Laurel. “It’s really exciting to imagine what we can achieve by combining our social media experience with the resources of a company that has played such a major role in shaping the mobile landscape. Now, we will have the resources to deliver on our vision to enable people to capture and enjoy their personal media on mobile devices, desktop computers and in all the other places that are important to them.”

What we think?
Sharing seems to be the new black. Last week when I met Taptu the VP of marketing Bob Last gave me a demo of the all new Taptu search and share engine. Since then I have seen “share” everywhere and this latest news from Nokia and Twango endorse the new black status. (**But I fear that with this Nokia can replicate what Taptu wants to do with ease as it has the content and search and advertising already - OH YES - now it also has the share).

At the moment its easy to capture and store images and video. But after they have been stored the problem starts. The first one is WHERE have they been stored and hence Nokia (and others) have launched tagging solutions to store and shave digital content. The other problem is how to show off the content stored. The most convenient method at the moment is to send to a third party such as Flickr or Blogger etc. But what is missing is the ability to share easily swap or share content instantly via a number of media. Indeed sending an MMS is always a possibility but it’s the knowing which device your friend or partner users and which services it allows and enables etc.

Anyway sharing is instant communication. We believe that IM is a great way to share in the future – but sometimes retrieving information from the Internet and then saving it or reducing the size or bits of it to send via IM can be a headache – especially on mobile.

Sharing is the future and simple organized sharing vital across multi-media. Its not only about sending baby pictures but sharing also has the potential of being a huge enterprise solution…. viral mobile advertising promotions also spring to mind.
