Nokia breakfast: exclusive launch of new N86 mobile device
Nokia unveiled its new mobile device at an exclusive breakfast this morning at MWC - the N86 8MP. Nokia is so proud of its 8 megapixel Carl Zeiss camera that the official name of the product has 8MP in it! We had a great intro to the new device and run through of some its capabilities from Ray Haddow, Senior Manager, Communications and Social Media:

Nokia is very clear that this phone is aimed square at camera-phone enthusiasts. It´s the first camera phone on the market with a mechanical shutter lens. Examples of images taken with the N86 were posted around the room, and they were genuinely impressive – especially the low-light pics. There was a Q&A after the intro with representatives from Carl Zeiss and Nokia, and some very interesting information came to light
Why is Nokia only releasing an 8MP camera now when other manufacturers are announcing 12MP cameras? “More megapixels does not make for better pictures” was the official response. Rather than assemble a camera from pre-made parts, Nokia has created a custom built camera with wide-aperture lens, mechanical shutter and advanced dual-LED flash. Instead of just pumping the number of MPs, Nokia is trying to improve image quality. The major problem here is educating the public about this philosophy
Why dual-LED instead of the previous Xenon flash? The 3rd generation LED in the N86 provides 60% more light than previous LED flashes. Also, with a Xenon flash the device would have been 4mm thicker, adding to it´s already hefty 16.5mm.
